Derbyshire 21 Waxwing Egginton at High Bridge GPs

 Thanks to Rod Key for the following:-

CARSINGTON WATER   The adult Great Northern Diver still present on Mar.17th. along with 25 Barnacle Geese and 36 Curlews. On Mar 10th Simon Roddis found a flock of 7 Avocets on Stones Island first light and they then moved down to Sheepwash  and were present until 11.20 a.m. at least. This is the 3rd highest flock ever seen in the county following on from 15 which flew through Church Wilne Reservoir in April 1992 and 8 which flew over Shardlow in April 1960. The long staying Ruff still present on Mar 16th and the Cettis Warbler still present on Mar 15th. A pair of Common Scoter on Mar 13th with the first Wheatear on Mar. 16th.Common Snipe peaked at 78 on Mar. 10th and still up to 3 Jack Snipe in the Hopton Reed bed up to Mar 15. Single Sand Martins on Mar. 11/14th. A peak total of 18 Chiffchaffs around the Reservoir on Mar.12th. A Ringed Plover on Mar 13/14th and up to 2 Dunlin on  most dates up to Mar 14th.

WILLINGTON GP   A drake Garganey was found in front of the hide on Mar 14th and was still present on Mar 17th. Two Mediterranean Gulls on Mar 14/15th. Pintail peaked at 11 on Mar 13th.

HORSLEYGATE, OWLER BAR   The Great Grey Shrike still present on Mar 16th.

FOREMARK RESERVOIR   Still a juv. Glaucous Gull in the roost on Mar 16th with 2 on Mar 10/11th. Also 2 Mediterranean Gulls roosted on Mar 10th with 3-2 ads and a 1st winter on Mar 14th. The adult Iceland Gull last roosted on Mar 11th.

DRAKELOW DWT RESERVE   A Great White Egret on Mar 16th.

SINFIN MOOR   The imm. male Black Redstart last noted on Mar. 11th.

UPPERTOWN   The Hooded Crow last noted on Mar. 12th at Peasenhurst.

CARR VALE DWT RESERVE   A pair of Garganey were found on Mar 14th and were still present on Mar 16th.

HOLMEBROOK VALLEY CP   2 Whooper Swans on Mar 12th.


BUNSAL COB  2 Wheatear on Mar 16th.

LONG EATON GP   2 Sand Martins on Mar. 12th along with 12 Chiffchaff.

ASTON-ON-TRENT GRAVEL PITS   On mar 10th20 Great Crested Grebes, 19 Cormorants, 2 Grey Heron, 3 Greylag Geese, 5 Shelduck, 2 Wigeon, 8 Gadwall, 43 Teal, 31 Shoveler, 129 Tufted Duck, 38 Goldeneye, 4 Smew including a drake,  Similar numbers on Mar 16th but only 2 Smew-both drakes, 57 Shoveler, 44 Goldeneye, 2 Oystercatchers, 1 Jack Snipe, a Ruff and c50 Goldfinches.

WILLINGTON CANAL PIT   On Mar 12th both Scaup were still present with 1 now being in full plumage. Also 2 Great Crested Grebes, 1 Shelduck, 1 Pochard, 15 Tufted Duck, 5 Goldeneye and a Cettis Warbler.

HIGH BRIDGE GP   On Mar 12th4 Great Crested Grebes, 3 Greylag Geese, 6 Shelduck, 262 Wigeon, 4 Gadwall, 13 Teal, 14 Pintail, 15 Goosander, 3  Oystercatcher and a Redshank.

CHURCH WILNE RESERVOIR   On Mar 14th 13 Great Crested Grebes, 3 Cormorants, 24 Wigeon, 6 Gadwall, 112 Tufted Duck, 13 Goldeneye, a “redhead” Smew still present, 2 Common Buzzards and 89 Coot.

WAXWINGS   Still quite a few small flocks about with 26 in Long Eaton on Mar 10th, 10 in Whaley Bridge on Mar 11th, 10 in Codnor on Mar 12th, 12 in Mickleover on Mar 13th and 21 in Littleover and 5 in Darley Abbey on Mar 14th.
