JMNR Sightings – 26th July 2019

Week 17 of the butterfly transect was carried out by Mike and Jane Steel, 14:10, 23°C, sunshine 60%.

A total of 90 butterflies were seen as follows: 1 Small Skipper, 1 Large Skipper, 2 Brimstone, 2 Large White, 1 Small White, 4 Green-veined White, 6 Red Admiral, 7 Peacock, 2 Comma, 3 Dark Green Fritillary?*, 1 Speckled Wood, 12 Gatekeeper, 10 Meadow Brown, 10 Ringlet, 1 Small Heath, 27 unidentified White.

*NB: Ken Orpe, the county butterfly recorder, questioned whether the Dark Green Fritillaries might have been Silver washed Fritillaries as the latter were moving north through the county at the time. M& J Steel were unable to confirm if this was the case. It should be noted though that DG Fritillaries have been recorded on site before whereas SG Fritillaries have not.
