News 13th November 2017

Thanks to Rod Key for the following:-

MIDDLETON MOOR   A juv. Glaucous Gull came in to roost late afternoon of 3rd Nov. It re-appeared in the roost on 8th Nov and has come into the roost every night since then up to 12th Nov. A very early record for this “white-winger” and at a most unusual locality. Thanks to David Hatfield and Diane Gregory for finding it. Also up to 8 Yellow Legged Gulls have also been using the roost.

STAUNTON HAROLD RESERVOIR   A Hawfinch flew South over the res at about 10.00.a.m. on 13th Nov.

WYVER LANE   A Great White Egret roosted here on 10th Nov and was still present early morning on 11th Nov before it flew off.

CARSINGTON WATER   A Great White Egret on 12th Nov-presumably the Wyver Lane bird-with a total of 29 Whooper Swans present. Up to 4 Ruff, 15 Dunlin, 1 Ringed Plover and 5 Redshank still about. Sixteen Whooper Swans flew East and 190 Pink Footed Geese flew through in 2skeins on 2nd Nov. A Hawfinch flew SW on 2nd Nov with 2/3 on 5th Nov, 6 on 6th Nov with a minimum of 28 on 7th Nov mostly moving SW. One flew through on 8th Nov. with another 10 SW on 9th Nov. A Bar Tailed Godwit on 9th Nov with a black Tailed Godwit on 19th Nov.

ASTON-ON-TRENT GP   A Great White Egret again on 7th Nov with a Bittern again seen on 9th Nov. Just  a reminder that this site is strictly private.

SHIPLEY COUNTRY PARK   A winter male Snow Bunting was seen close to Bell Lane on 7th Nov. Probably a first record for this locality.

DRAKELOW DWT RESERVE   2 Cattle Egrets dropped into the spit on 2nd Nov before flying out and 1 re-appeared on 5th Nov. Also the Long Tailed Duck again noted on 2nd Nov.

OGSTON RESERVOIR   Up to 2 Little Egrets noted with 2 Whooper Swans and 900 Pink Footed Geese flew East on 5th Nov., 3 Dunlin on 7th Nov. with 1 on 9/10th Nov. Up to 3 Goosanders noted. A Stonechat on 7th Nov with the usual ad. Yellow Legged Gull still present.

HIGHORDISH   39 Whooper Swans flew ESE on 2nd Nov and were later seen over Annesley Pit Top in Notts. Also a total of 3505 Pink Footed Geese flew East in 9 skeins 50 minutes and a Goshawk noted. Eight Hawfinches flew SW on 3rd Nov. with a Merlin on 4th Nov. On 6th Nov 8 Golden Plovers and 14 Bramblings moved through.

CARR VALE DWT RESERVE   A Great White Egret and a Hawfinch on 4th Nov. Up to 3 Little Egrets, 29 Wigeon, 98 Gadwall, 3 Shoveler, 5Water Rails and 2 Peregrines noted. On 2nd Nov. 475 Pink Footed Geese flew SE in 3 skeins whilst on 5th 1050 in 8 skeins flew SE early morning and 1350 again flew SE mid-morning with different flight lines being used by the 2 numbers involved. 35 Golden Plover on 1st with the Cettis Warbler and the Chffchaff present throughout,.

GLOSSOP   A male Golden Pheasant-obviously an escape-was found in a garden on 10th Nov.

WILLINGTON GP   The Firecrest was again seen by Richard James on 1st Nov. but has not been seen again. Also the Bittern showed briefly on 1st Nov. A Common Sandpiper on 5th Nov. with 24 Little Egrets roosting on 11th Nov and 2 Goosander and 9 Egyptian Geese also noted. A report of a Marsh Harrier on 12th Nov.

RED KITES   Single birds at Allestree and Sawley on 1st Nov and Great Longstone on 6th Nov.

RING NECKED PARAKEET   A virtual influx of these colourful birds with single birds at Mickleover on 3/8th  Nov, Allestree Park on 4/8/11thNov. and  Alvaston on 9th Nov.
