ASTON-ON-TRENT GRAVEL PITS   A Great White Egret was found here on 13th Oct by Vic Bevan, only the 2nd record for the site. He was also lucky enough to see a Bittern here on 2nd Oct. On 12th Oct 2 Little Grebes, 18 Great Crested Grebes, 41 Cormorants, 4 Little Egrets, 7 Grey Herons, 36 Mute Swans, 126 Wigeon, 33 Gadwall, 9 Teal, 40 Shoveler, 139 Tufted Duck, 10 Lapwing, 10 Lesser Black Backed Gulls, 1 Herring Gull-ad., 1 Kingfisher, 7 singing Robins and 1 Cettis Warbler. Please be aware that this site is completely private with permit access only possible during the working week. It is now virtually impossible to view the area from the A50 because of the vegetation.  

CARSINGTON WATER   The eclipse drake Green Winged Teal was still present from Sheepwash on 11th Oct although it could not be found on 13th Oct. A Rock Pipit and 6 Redwing also on 13th Oct and up to 9 Little Egrets, 236 Wigeon, 522 Teal, 58 Gadwall, 17 Shoveler, 23 Pintail, 3 Red Crested Pochard, 130 Pochard, 9 Ringed Plover, 8 Dunlin, 3 Ruff, a Redshank and 5 Yellow Legged Gulls noted. A Little Stint on 5th Oct with 2 Scaup on 6th Oct and a late Wheatear on 11th Oct.

WILLINGTON GRAVEL PITS  The Bittern was again seen on 5th Oct and up to 15 Little Egrets have started to roost here. On 11th Oct 8 Great Crested Grebes, 32 Cormorants,  4 Grey Herons, 29 Greylag Geese, 174 Canada Geese, 1 Greylag x Canada Goose hybrid, 2 Wigeon, 51 Gadwall, 41 Teal, 3 Shoveler,  6 Pochard, 29 Tufted Duck,2 Great Black Backed Gulls-an ad. and a 1st winter, 8 Stick Doves and a Raven.

BASLOW   An exhausted Manx Shearwater was picked up on 7th Oct and taken into care. The 4th record this year and the 2nd latest ever for the county.

OGSTON RESERVOIR   A Yellow Browed Warbler was heard to call 3 times by Steve Mann on 9th Oct but, frustratingly, could not be seen with another possible sighting on 12th Oct. A Water Pipit also on 9th Oct. An adult Whooper Swan and a drake Common Scoter on 7th Oct. with a Dunlin and a Brambling on 10th Oct. with  a juv. Merlin on 11th Oct. Also noted was a Little Egrets on a few dates and a juv. Goshawk on 6th Oct with the usual adult Yellow Legged Gull still present.

HIGHORDISH WATCH POINT   A Hawfinch, a Mealy Redpoll and the first Fieldfare flew over on9th Oct with an adult Goshawk on 11th Oct.

WYVER LANE DWT RESERVE   An adult Whooper Swan on 6th Oct with a Red Kite and 2 Stonechats on 10th Oct.

SHIPLEY COUNTRY PARK   A Black Redstart at Meadows Farm on 7th Oct.

SINFIN MOOR WETLANDS   A Ring Necked Parakeet and 6 Egyptian Geese on 8th Oct.
