News 6/10/19

YELLOW BROWED WARBLERS   One was found late morning on 5th Oct calling along the embankment at Carr Vale DWT Reserve by Mark Beevers and was still present early afternoon although difficult to see at times. A pager report also of one in Derby behind the Cathedral mid-afternoon on 5th Oct. These will  be the 2nd and 3rd this year after the January bird at Sinfin Moor  and the 18/19th for Derbyshire if accepted by the county Rare Bird Committee.

CARSINGTON WATER   On 4th Oct a Slavonian Grebe was found by Roger Carrington off Stones Island and showed well and was still present on Oct. 6th. This is the first county record since 2017. Also a Grey Phalarope was found near the Visitor Centre by Simon Roddis and again showed well until late morning when it disappeared. This is the 3rd county record in a week. On 1st Oct. 3 juv. Arctic Terns found late morning and they remained until mid-afternoon. A Rock Pipit flew over the Visitor Centre on 6th Oct. The 1st Redwings noted on 4th Oct when 650m flew SW with 130 flying SW on 5th Oct. Single Dunlin and Golden Plover on 2nd Oct. On 5th Oct 47 Ravens noted of which a flock of 46 flew E early morning. Also noted where up to 2 Little Egrets, 23 Wigeon, 14 Gadwall, 65 Teal, 1 Shoveler, 70 Pochard, a sub-ad. Yellow Legged Gull, 3 Blackcaps and 11 Chiffchaffs. Still 3 Swallows on 5th Oct.

TORSIDE RESERVOIR   The Grey Phalarope still present up to 3rd Oct and then again on 5th Oct.

HOLME MOSS   The 2 Black Redstarts-1 male-still at the Transmitting Station on 5th Oct.

R.TRENT, WALTON-ON-TRENT   On the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border a Long Tailed Duck on pits by the R.Trent early morning. Is this the returning Drakelow bird of the last couple of years.

OGSTON RESERVOIR   The Great White Egret still present on 30th Sept. along with the female Garganey. The first returning Goldeneye-a drake-on 1st Oct. The juv. Male Goshawk again on  30th Sept. Still 68 House Martins and 2 Swallows on 1st Oct along with a Redpoll and  200 House Martins on 2nd Oct. The 1st Redwings were 8 on 2nd Oct. Also 15 Mandarins, 7 Wigeon, 4 Snipe and the ad. Yellow Legged Gull noted.

CARR VALE DWT RESERVE   On 30th Sept 8 Pink Footed Geese flew W and 14 Golden Plovers noted along with the 1st Redwing of the Autumn. Also 553 Meadow Pipits and 4 Siskin flew S, the highlights of a busy viz migging day. On 1st Oct a Golden Plover, a Green Sandpiper, 17 Snipe and a Rock Pipit. On 2nd Oct a very showy Bittern performed well in the reeds below the viewing mound and the 2 juv. Garganey were seen for the last time. Also 450 Pink Footed Geese flew E in 5 skeins and 80 flew W in two skeins. Also seen were 30 Common Buzzards,  a Golden Plover and a Little Egret and a very late Lesser Whitethroat. On 3rd Oct 107 Redwings flew W. A Cettis Warbler on 4/5th Oct and 275 Redwings and 8 Siskins moved through. Up to 14 Wigeon,34 Gadwall, 99 Teal, 3 Shoveler, 2 Peregrines,35 Swallows and 50 House Martins noted.

DRAKWLOW DWT RESERVE   A Marsh Harrier on 3rd Oct. Up to 10 Little Egrets, 10 Wigeon, 27 Gadwall, 15 Shoveler, 1 Peregrine, 106 House Martins, 8 Swallows and 4 Cettis Warblers noted.

DOVE HOLES QUARRY   A Hobby on 1st Oct.

WYVER LANE DWT RESERVE   A Marsh Harrier on 2nd Oct.

YELDERSLEY   A Red Kite on 3rd Oct.

REDWINGS   1 at Chellaston and 2 at Kinder Bank on 4th Oct with 24 at Kinder Bank on 5th Oct.
