Old Moor (RSPB) + little known parts

There will be a staggered start – for the early risers 07:30 at Broomhill Flash (S73 0YH) OR 09:30 in the Old Moor car park (S73 0YF) for those that don’t want an early start.

Date: 27/10/2022 Meeting Point: Broomhill Flash Hide next to the car park (S73 0YH) very close to RSPB Old Moor Time: 7:30 Lunch: bring packed lunch and drink or use RSPB restaurant at Old Moor Transport: Members cars Cost: free for RSPB members, £5 non-members, Leader: Martin Kaye Numbers Limit: None.

The early start is intended to avoid the worst of the morning traffic.  If you’re going to be late make sure that you have the leader’s phone number (07833 720542) so you can find out where the group has moved to.

We’ll start at Broomhill Flash and finally end up at the main RSPB reserve at Old Moor.  Directions One hour easy drive from Chesterfield up the M1 to junction 36. Then follow A6195 signed to Doncaster counting 10 roundabouts (not including Junction 36) with brown signs to RSPB Old Moor.  At the last roundabout (the 10th) where the brown sign indicates a right turn to Old Moor on the A633, take the first exit signed Broomhill. Pass the Old Moor Tavern after a few hundred metres then drive a further 400 metres to a right turn into Broomhill Flash car park.

After that we will probably visit Wombwell Ings (a short distance away).

Old Moor has 7 hides + 2 viewing screens, an excellent shop and cafe.  All flat, easy going but can be a bit wet in places after heavy rain.  Has all round interest but particularly good for water birds with the possibility of Bearded Tits and a Bittern.
